Rheinburgenweg
Walking above the Rhine River
The Rheinburgenweg on the left bank of the Rhine is a distance footpath and is the pendant to the right bank`s Rheinsteig. Opened in 2010 and applied for all criteria of the Wanderbares Deutschland quality hallmark, it leads on almost 200 kilometres from Remagen to Bingen.
Route and highlights
Hiking enthusiasts will find a total of 13 individual sections offering the opportunity to explore the World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Boppard lies halfway between Bingen and Remagen. In Boppard Bad-Salzig ends stage no. 8 of the Rheinburgenweg from / to Rhens and starts / ends no. 9 in the direction St. Goar.
Although the intensity of the Rheinburgenweg trail is inferior to the Rheinsteig, many passages run above the Rhine`s height. This allows spectacular viewpoints. On the course, it passes beyond both the Oelsbergsteig at Oberwesel and the Via Ferrata Boppard. Both are demanding and can be taken as an alternative to the Rheinburgenweg. Thus, the alpine hiking enthusiasts come fully at their expenses. Between Bingen and Koblenz hikers are expected by special highlights like the Loreley, the Günderode House, castle Rheinfels, the view of the Hostile Brothers and the Four Lake View which can alternatively be reached by the chair lift in Boppard as well as the via ferrata Boppard. Shortly before Koblenz, the view of the Marksburg is waiting as well as a passage to Stolzenfels Castle.
Besides Koblenz with its fortress Ehrenbreitstein and the cable car at the German Corner, there are further highlights like the geyser in Andernach.
Traffic Connection
Characterisitc for the Rheinburgenweg besides the magnificent views and its lighter route - is its excellent accessibility. So the individual day trips are secured by a good transport network connections by bus, train and ship. The numerous ferries between Bingen and Koblenz allow switching between Rheinburgenweg and Rheinsteig.
